For the record, I always want the long version when I ask you how you’re doing.
When I ask my friends “How are you?” They know that I really mean it. So when they give me a typical/canned answer like “I’m good”, I’ll nudge a little for a reply that gives me insight into their wellbeing. I’m looking for indication that THEY know that I’m really here for them. And you’ll only get THAT kind of reply once you’ve proven that you care. Care enough to ask AND care enough to listen.
Author Brené Brown defines CONNECTION as “the power that exists between people when they feel seen, heard and valued”.
Being sincerely curious and concerned about the joys and struggles of people in your life is important. Genuine connections matter. So ask someone today: “How are you, really?”, then lean in, listen and connect with what they’re telling you.
How are YOU doing?
