The Sweet Potato is a true account of a dutch immigrant's childhood during occupation of the Netherlands during the 2nd World War, as told by a grandfather peeling potatoes for a family gathering as he relives scenes from his childhood.
The Sweet Potato, written and illustrated by Karyn Van Dooren, shows war through the eyes of a young boy and provides a wonderful entry into a discussion of the emotional impact of war. It would be especially meaningful to those post-war immigrants for whom this experience was life altering and, in many cases, precipitated their decision to immigrate to Canada. The illustrations richly convey the despair and ultimate hope during this time of much turmoil as the story unfolds through the eyes of a young boy. For those of Dutch heritage, this book is a wonderful little gem to add to your children's collection.
Children between the ages of eight to twelve.
