Faith-Based Features

christian films netflix 330It’s no joke that it’s tough to find quality family movies today – especially faith based films. As someone who likes to unwind with a bowl of popcorn and a solid movie, I thought it would be appropriate to share some of my favourite faith-based films that you can find on the common streaming platform: Netflix.

Disclaimer: this list is designed for Canadian Netflix, so if you are viewing in another country, the list may vary.

samekindofdiffasme1) Same Kind of Different As Me (2017)
Based on a true story, Same Kind of Different As Me tells the story of businessman Ron Hall and his wife Deborah as they struggle to find purpose. Their lives change when they develop an unlikely friendship with Denver Moore, a homeless man that in the end helps them save their struggling marriage. The accuracy of this film to the true story is quite linear, as Ron Hall himself is one of the producers.
Featuring: Renée Zellweger, Greg Kinnear, Dijmon Hounsou

miraclesheaven2) Miracles from Heaven (2016)
This film shares the story of Anna Beam, who lives with a rare and incurable disorder – leaving her unable to digest food. Despite the diagnosis, Anna’s mom Christy works tirelessly to save her daughter. Everything changes when Anna tells a story of her visiting heaven after she survived a fall into a tree. Anna’s family becomes even more surprised to discover that she is now showing signs of recovery.
Featuring: Jennifer Garner, Martin Henderson, Queen Latifah

casechrist3) The Case for Christ (2017)
This true story is based off the life of Christian author Lee Strobel and his book ‘The Case for Christ’. Once an investigative journalist and self-proclaimed atheist, Lee sets out to disprove the existence of God after his wife becomes a Christian. The results of his research end up surprising him, causing him to rethink his faith.
Featuring: Mike Vogel, Erika Christensen, Faye Dunaway

the shack4) The Shack (2017)
Based off the bestselling book by William P. Young, The Shack tells the story of Mack Phillips, a grieving man who received an invitation to meet with God. This heart-wrenching film will take you on a roller coaster of emotions as Mack finds peace after tragedy.
Featuring: Sam Worthington, Octavia Spencer, Tim McGraw

war room5) War Room (2015)
Directed by the Kendrick brothers, War Room is a movie about the power of prayer. The Jordan family seems to have everything under control – a beautiful daughter, a dream home, and great jobs. But underneath it all, Tony and his wife Elizabeth have a marriage that is crumbling. Their lives take a turn when they meet Miss Clara, who encourages happiness through prayer.
Featuring: Priscilla Shirer, T.C. Stallings, Karen Abercrombie

risen16) Risen (2016)
Roman military tribune Clavius arrives at a crossroad when he tasked to investigate what happened to Jesus after His crucifixion. His quest is to disprove rumours of a risen Messiah and in the end makes him question his own beliefs and spirituality.
Featuring: Joseph Fiennes, Tom Felton, Peter Firth

hacksawridge7) Hacksaw Ridge (2016)
Directed by Mel Gibson, this film is one of my favourites on the list, but if you can’t handle a couple jump scares and a bit of war gore, this movie may not be an easy watch for you. The message however is so powerful. Hacksaw Ridge tells the true story of World War II Army Medic Desmond T. Doss. Desmond became the first man in American history to receive the Medal of Honor without firing a shot.
Featuring: Andrew Garfield, Sam Worthington, Milo Gibson

lettherebelight8) Let There Be Light (2017)
Directed by Kevin Sorbo, this is a raw and powerful film about the struggles Dr. Sol Harkens, an atheist, has after a near-death experience. Following this life changing experience, the world’s most famous atheist must reinvent himself to save his family and his soul.
Featuring: Kevin Sorbo, Sam Sorbo
