I [Care Baldwin] am not the type of person to be consumed by political news or engage in political debates. I just try and be as educated as I can be and make my voice heard by exercising my democratic right to vote.
But I know it’s easy to get caught up in the fear and division that surrounds election time.
Here are a few ways I have learned to respond:
1. Pray for those who are in leadership and who will be in leadership. Even if you don’t agree with what they stand for, it is so important that we continue to pray for our appointed leaders. That they demonstrate stewardship, wisdom, and discernment and surround themselves with good counsel.
Proverbs 11:14 “Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety.”
2. VOTE! We have a democratic right and responsibility. Even if you find it tough to decide how to vote, it’s better to make an educated choice than to not vote at all and then complain about the outcome.
We should pray for the election but also follow-up with action by voting. If you don’t know WHERE to vote, find out here at elections.on.ca
3. Respond in love and compassion – no matter the outcome. Politics are divisive and we, as the church, need to stands strong in love and continue to be the Light in our community. After all, we’re representing Jesus!
1 Peter 4:17 “For it is time for judgment to begin with God’s household; and if it begins with us, what will the outcome be for those who do not obey the gospel of God?”
4. Do not worry or fear because God is on the throne. He is the Answer. He’s the Light that breaks through the darkness. He’s the One who sets free and has the power to restore a nation.
Psalm 47:8 “God reigns over the nations; God is seated on his holy throne.”
