Music & Art

The summer before my 2nd year of University my best friend Amy & I backpacked across Europe. A highlight was Florence, Italy.

I was in awe of the art, some dating back to the 15th Century (!!). Beautiful pieces that told the current world what was important to their generation; what matter most to a group of people. Perhaps it was a because I was a communications student and had a love for media and a good story, but I fell in love with art. I realized this was their version of a magazine, a snapshot into culture. Although I wasn’t a Christian at the time, I was taken by the fact that most of these works of art are inspired by the Bible. This was what they chose to pass on to future generations.

Fast forward to 2015. I’m now a Christian, standing with my new husband in the National Art Gallery in Ottawa, looking at pieces of art from the Renaissance and Baroque periods while a quartet sings in the background. We move into the next room and art from a future generation, the Group of Seven, depict Canada’s rugged yet breathtaking landscape, a harp and violin compliment our thoughts as we marvel at the art. The talent and beauty of these various forms of art paint a picture of God. He is beauty, light and love.
The event at the Art Gallery is a part of a larger festival called “Music and Beyond” which combines classical music with different art disciplines. The festival runs until July 17th and a full schedule can be found online, musicandbeyond.ca.
