Today is the 206th Royal St. John’s Regatta, celebrated in Newfoundland, and is North America’s oldest annual sporting event.
Regatta: re·gat·ta. Noun. A sporting event consisting of a series of boat races. Rowing, sailing, or speedboats.
Why not hold your own regatta? Here are some ideas:
The Boats
The Track
- Use two rain gutters, close off the ends, and fill with water. This provides a lane for each boat.
- Inflatable pool
- Ditch, creek, or rain water run-off
- Pipe cut in half
The Race
First boat to reach the end wins!
In the case of sailboats, try competing by using a straw to blow air onto the sails.
Don't forget to clean up afterwards, and not abandon any materials outdoors!
