The CHRI/Sony advance screening of Overcomer last Saturday was exactly what we hoped for!
The audience were CHRI listeners, prize winners, donors and volunteers ranging from children to seniors and like any Christian audience, we were all ready to be uplifted with a message of grace and redemption.
Needless to say the Kendricks Brothers, producers of this and several other overtly Christian films, (War Room, Facing the Giants) didn't disappoint and, as in all of their movies, there were great cinematic moments pulling a range of emotions from us, filling the theatre with laughter and joy or (spoiler alert!) touching our hearts so deeply that this" tough guy" couldn't hold back the tears!
Overcomer is so professionally produced that we were lost in the believable performances, solid cinematography and the occasional well-known contemporary Christian song (straight off CHRI's recent top 20 charts!). All this talent and skill is woven together to create a story that needs to be told at this time in history when mainstream media plants so much doubt in our minds about God's role in our families.
To achieve all this, each one of the principal characters represent a carefully thought out story that might be yours. It's this relatability that makes "Overcomer" ring true as it brings home one lesson for you and another for me.
Try to catch it in theatre to support the producers. See it and believe what the greater Church community can achieve in the face of Hollywood's giants, but don't leave until the last credit scrolls by so you can bless the dozens of churches, church groups, volunteers and families that appear in the screen credits. It's like an honour role and unlike some big Hollywood names, they deserve our recognition.
