Letitia Wright on Faith

In a recent profile with the Hollywood Reporter, Black Panther star Letitia Wright opened up about how her faith intersects with her work as an up-and-coming movie star.

Wright’s career began with small but significant parts in the early 2010s. She had a role in an episode of Doctor Who, and she played a gang member on British television’s acclaimed Top Boy. She had a few feature roles, too, but Wright admits she was battling depression throughout those early days. It came to a head in 2015, and Wright started going to a Bible study and following Jesus. Her rehabilitation was her first priority—she says she turned down a role with Nicole Kidman during this period—but once she was reinvigorated, she landed parts in The Commuter and Ready Player One before her life-changing call for Black Panther.

Wright said after her audition, God told her she would earn the part. “I pride myself on not just changing the lane and taking everything,” she told THR. “If something feels off in my spirit [in regards to a part], I know that’s God’s way of saying, ‘You shouldn’t do that.'”

Wright can be seen portraying "Shuri" in Marvel's Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War.
