Bikers Ride Against Violence

Close to 100 riders took part in the 5th annual Bikers Against Violence "Cruise Don't Bruise" Fundraiser ride in support of the Eastern Ottawa Resource Centre this past Saturday. What a great group of supporters who braved heavy rain during a good part of the 200 km ride and helped raise $37,000! Wow!

The Eastern Ottawa Resource Centre has been offering a wide range of social and community services since 1979. In particular the ride was to raise awareness and to support the Centre's programs that assist women and the elderly who have suffered abuse and children witnessing abuse in the family. Just before the riders headed off at 9:00 am from the Beacon Hill shopping centre, Duty Inspector Mike Maloney of the Ottawa Police Force spoke about the importance of these programs. He talked about how he grew up in an abusive family environment and how his mother suffered serious abuse but there was no support at that time for her or others in abusive relationships.

The ride concluded at the Sir Wilfrid Laurier High School in Orleans with a BBQ and prizes for the participants, the grand prize being a brand new Yamaha Bolt motorcycle!

All in all it was a fun and worthwhile event that was very well organized by staff of the Resource Centre and their many volunteers.
