Untitled design 2023 02 07T152045.708A devastating 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck Turkey and northern Syria at 4:17 a.m. local time and the death toll has surpassed 11,000 as rescue efforts continue.

Samaritan’s Purse is working through local partners on the ground to assess needs in the Kahramanmaraş region of southern Turkey near the border with Syria. Learn more about the organization’s response to the crisis and support relief efforts HERE.

The initial quake was followed by a second powerful 7.5-magnitude temblor only hours later and at least 120 aftershocks. The seismic events could be felt as far away as Lebanon and Israel! This is among the strongest earthquakes to strike this area in nearly a century.

Please PRAY that search and rescue teams have access to people who need immediate attention, despite damaged roads and frigid temperatures, and for so many suffering families.

In a speech, Reuters reports that the Turkish president said on Tuesday that 70 countries had offered help in search and rescue operations and that Turkey planned to open up hotels in the tourism hub of Antalya, to the west, to temporarily house people affected.
