How to Get Your Kids to Drink More Water

childwaterWe all know that drinking water is important in keeping our bodies and minds healthy, but in a world of Sunny D, Fruitopia, and other tasty juices, it can be difficult to encourage our children to drink the best liquid for them -- water. All hope is not lost, though!

Cara Demme-Pratt, Registered Dietician at the Children's Hospital of Colorado, has shared 11 ways parents can help children drink more water, and we've summed them up into 3 tips for you!

  1. Involve fruit in any way possible.
You can use frozen fruit instead of ice cubes, infuse their water with all sorts of fruits (to make it more fun, you can purchase some fun water bottles with built in fruit infusers, here!), or even freeze ice cube trays with berries and add them to the water.
  2. Have a good bottle or source from which they can drink their water.
Buy tiny water bottles (4 or 8 ounces) that are easy for kids to hold and drink, or just a special cup that they can enjoy holding, drinking from and refilling! Amazon has some nice mini water bottle tumblers for kids for purchase, here

  3. Motivate them & show them the way!
Give your child a reward sticker for drinking their water or do a special dance when they give you an empty bottle. Also, make sure that you are being a role model and are demonstrating healthy drinking habits. The more you lead, the more likely they are to follow!

How much water does my child need?
There are various factors to consider when it comes to water intake, but Cara Demme-Pratt reccomends that a general rule to get enough water is that your child or teen should drink at least 6 to 8 (eight-ounce) cups of water a day.
